Passenger was proud to provide video services for this years OTA conference held March 15 here in Sioux Falls. OTA derives it’s name from the regions three states last three letters… south dakOTA, north dakOTA, and minnesOTA. The brainchild of Hugh Weber, the conference seeks to connect the social and creative capital of the region. This year the conference brought in 14 speakers from around the country… each innovators in their respective fields.

to learn more visit www.ota.is.

Tasked with creating video vignettes for each speaker, an opener video, and two sponsor videos we wanted to visualize the idea of creative collisions. We believed the best way to do so was develop vignettes for each speaker that either abstractly or concretely spoke to their work. Then put those elements into motion and/or collision and film it at 1,000 frames per second. We also placed an emphasis on the sound design to help create our mood for the pieces.

Special thanks to Hugh Weber and Mike Billeter for both making this a great creative process and a great conference. Thanks as well to Dalton Coffey and Todd Montsma who lent some much needed help during the filming.

What follows is the opening video and each speaker vignette in order of speaking lineup the day of the conference.

We are roughly 2.5 months away from from jumping into production of our full length feature film Doug & Ami. Our cast and crew is back on board and we couldn’t be more excited about the project!

The time between last summer when we had to pause the project and now has been well spent in pre-production. Jordan Born joined us in a part time capacity at Passenger to help with pre-production. He’s a capable producer and we’re lucky to have him on board. You can say hello to Jordan at jordan@passengerproductions.com

Doug & Ami is a film about a lonely bachelor farmer who befriends a prostitute but must contend with her con-artist friends. The film explores issues of forgiveness in the light of betrayal. Specifically how one will give everything to and for the person they love despite the pain that may cause. The beauty in Doug’s choices is magnified by the upheaval Ami ultimately brings to his solitary life. Pain brought on by his initial desire to simply connect with another human being.

We call action June 18 here in Sioux Falls and yell wrap on July 18 in Sioux County IA. Stay tuned for updates along the way and thanks for your continued support for the film!

In the meantime take a look at one of the scenes cut together as well as a teaser compiled of footage shot this past summer.

Almost eight years ago when Passenger first started, our production vehicle was my personal car, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. Physics were often defied as we would cram a light kit, camera and sound gear into the back of the car.

A few years and some torn upholstery later.. we were able to move into a GMC work van and trailer. It served us well, however the trailer proved problematic on ice and the van was a real gas guzzler. Besides, working out of a trailer proved to be less than ideal while out on location.

And now we our happy to introduce the latest Passenger production vehicle. A 2008 Dodge Sprinter. A reputation for dependability, comparatively better gas mileage, and plenty of room to work out of make this a great choice for transportation. Furthermore, I believe that the ability to work comfortably on location and not have concerns about vehicle dependability helps the overall vibe on set. Finally, the mobility this offers Passenger means a larger footprint where we can both offer our services and pursue internal creative projects.

Recently Passenger was privileged to help out with the Avera Cancer Institute’s Just Say The Word campaign.

41% of us will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in our lifetime. 100% of us would rather not talk about it. Cancer affects us all, but most of us still feel powerless to talk about it. It is a word that is loaded with fear, anxiety, and ignorance. Only when we set those things aside can we better understand what it really means to live with cancer. Let’s take back the power we’ve given the word “cancer.” We can start by not being afraid to say it. ( copy from the website www.justsaytheword.com)

Passenger handled the aspects of production for television spots that are designed to drive traffic to the website. Collaborating alongside Fresh Produce and Pixel Box the spots hit the aesthetic tone that supports the overall messaging of the campaign. Specifically a looser handheld technique, use of natural and motivated lighting, and edit & color pulled together by Pixel Box all came together for the desired aesthetic.

Please visit www.justsaytheword.com to hear from people living with cancer and share your own direct or indirect experiences with cancer.

On July 16, Passenger teamed up with a talented group of collaborators and launched principle photography on our feature film Doug & Ami. A passion project five years in the making, Doug & Ami fell victim to some uncontrollable circumstances that have forced us to pause production until next summer.

Specifically our talented lead actress developed a cyst on her throat. Besides being visible on camera it posed a threat of infection and as such demanded immediate surgical attention. I am happy to say that her surgery successfully removed the benign cyst and she has recovered beautifully.

As immediate re-scheduling around our talent’s and crew’s other schedules proved near impossible we elected to wait to resume shooting. Being thrilled with the footage we already captured I want to make sure we have the time and energy to make this film on our terms. As such, waiting seemed like the logical choice.

I have been overwhelmed by the show of support for this project and am incredibly grateful to be a South Dakotan pursuing my passion for film here in our backyard. Besides some selected still frames posted below, stay tuned for individual scenes I hope to post soon. In addition to planning for next summer we will be shooting some “flashback” scenes this fall as well.

Again thanks for your financial support, words of encouragement, and prayers throughout this process. As circumstances for pausing were uncontrollable I trust that the end product will end up being that much more focused. I look forward to delivering a well crafted story next summer.
